Building a Log Cabin Playhouse

Building a log cabin playhouse is a wonderful family project.

The kids will learn about planning, gathering the materials needed and the actual construction of their log cabin playhouse.

When the building of the log cabin playhouse is completed, they will feel the accomplishment and pride of building their own log cabin playhouse.

If they enjoyed playing with Lincoln Logs when they were young, they will love this experience.

Building a log cabin playhouse for kids can be a simple and easy construction project, however, it can also become a very challenging event, depending on the type of construction and logs you use.

You'll need to consider what type of logs, where are you going to get them, are they peeled, uniform in size, flat cut top and bottom, half cut to reduce weight and to make it easier to frame the inside, ect.

Back in my days (way back their in 49-50), my uncle, cousins, with grandpa supervising, and me the gopher (go-for), cut down alter trees, cut the lengths and notched them, built a simple log cabin, used moss for caulking, cut a window and door out, use old wood to frame them in, added an old window and door with hinges. The roof was flat with logs twined together with moss and mud to seal it, sort of. The roof became our lookout post and surprisingly didn't leak to much. Building this log cabin playhouse didn't cost a dime, just time.

My son-in-law, daughter and grandkids use to build two types of log cabin playhouses, whole round and half round logs. The half round log cabin playhouse was built on four by six skids for easy moving with a tractor or pickup. They used small six to eight inch pine trees or lodge pole pine logs. Debarked them, and for the half round type log cabin, used a flat cut on the top and bottoms for a better fit , with internal rebar or interior two by four reinforcement, to give the walls better strength. Building a log cabin playhouse with half pine logs really reduces the weight and provides flat walls inside. As you may know, cutting half rounds with a chain saw is not easy or fun, so consider buying or taking you logs to a small mill for cutting.

You might want to consider buying a log cabin playhouse kit to build. Some kits are actual logs, just like the log home kits, or others are simulated logs, four by six, router edges to look like logs. In either case, the log cabin playhouse kit will come with detailed plans, all necessary materials, parts numbered or coded, and about as fun to put together as a kids Lincoln logs toy. Less stress and more fun for you and the children. Another thought is to purchase a log cabin playhouse plan, which comes with a complete list of materials needed and possible suggestions where best to buy or get them. There are fence post and pole companies around that you might be able to find the right size and length logs (posts) you need for building a log cabin playhouse for your children.
